The Sue Beevers Memorial Scholarships

Music Scholarships for Students

The Sue Beevers Memorial Fund

Sue Lyon Beevers was a popular, multi-talented woman who helped found Fresno Folklore Society.

Sue was a driving force behind our organization, and was active in fostering Traditional Music in the Greater Fresno area until her passing from brain cancer in 2014.  Her good friend, Sherron Brown, led the effort to remember Sue by creating a memorial fund to support children and teens who wished to pursue traditional folk music forms, and to share their musical gifts in their own communities.

The fund grows continuously with monthly donations from an anonymous donor; gifts to the fund from Society members and others; as well as fundraisers, including our annual Sue Beevers Memorial Concert held in the summer months.  All recipients of the scholarship are invited to perform and be a part of this annual concert.

Attention young musicians, their parents and their music teachers, it is time to think about applying for a scholarship from the Sue Beevers Memorial Fund.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Sue Beevers Memorial Fund, please allow me to bring you up-to-date. Sue Lyon Beevers was a popular, multi-talented woman who helped found the Fresno Folklore Society. There are those who say that it might not have been established if it hadn't been for Sue. Sadly, she died of brain cancer in 2014. Her good friend, Sherron Brown spearheaded the effort to remember Sue through a fund to benefit children who want to pursue traditional music and need funds to do so. The award could be used for such things as music camps, lessons, and the purchase and repair of instruments.

The first fundraiser was held on June 21, 2015 in the Wolk Folk Garden. A totally volunteer effort was set up, with items donated and cleaned up for a silent auction. Musicians gathered by Steve Ono donated their services. Lynn Ross donated proceeds from Lynn's Jam sales that evening. The Sue Beever's Memorial Fund was now funded!

Then Sherron herself was diagnosed with cancer. She took about a year off from life while she went through cancer treatments. I am very happy to report that she is cancer free. I have seen her back at the Basque on Wednesday nights looking stronger each week. Meanwhile, others stepped up. Linda Guerrero created rules and an application form that were approved by the FFS Board. Board member Karen Starcevich worked hard getting the word out to music teahers and others about the available scholarships. She also worked with the FFS Board reviewing the applications and selecting the recipients.

On June 26, also in the Wolk Folk Garden, another benefit concert was held and the first scholarships were awarded. Karen Starcevich had the pleasure of handing out the checks to happy recipients. The awards went to Madisyn Allen toward the purchase of a violin; Abi Halsey to get new strings for her violin, to re-hair her bow, and continue lessons; and to Jillian Gillingham toward the purchase of a banjo.

The Sue Beevers Memorial Fund grows continuously through an anonymous donation of $100 per month. In order to help as many young musicians as possible, additional donations are welcome. Anyone wanting to contribute to the fund may mail a check to: Fresno Folklore Society, Attention Jim Ross, P.O. Box 4617, Fresno, CA 93744, or hand it to Jim in person at the Basque on a Wednesday evening. Please write "Sue Beevers Fund" on the memo line of your check.

Thank goodness for young musicians. They are keeping alive the music of yesteryear.
